hydroponics Choose the space you are going to grow in
hydroponics_cupboard Cupboard - ideal for 1 or 2 hydroponic systems and a small light such as a 250W. Cupboards are great because they are typically within a house and will have nice climate control which is *essential* to plant growth.

Lights that can be used - 110W or 250W

hydroponics Ideal climate in cupboard, openly doors gives adequate change of air so no fans usually required for air in/air out. Results from cupboard growing are very good typically due to climate.
hydroponics Small space can heat up so you will need to install circulation fan if it gets too hot. Small space also = small crop.

hydroponics attic

Attic - large open spaces and typically with ventilation for bringing in outside air, attics are great spaces to grow in. More importantly, they are not easily accessible so are less likely to be accidentally discovered. Typically you can run many hydroponics systems and large powered lights such as 600W due to the size available.

Lights that can be used - 110W, 250W, 400W, 600W

hydroponics Great big space to grow in, fresh air typically enters lofts for good CO2 exchange. Mould free typically also.
hydroponics Temperature and climate vary dramatically - typically too hot in the summer and too cold in winter. Advice is to ensure flowering is during a cooler season e.g.autumn.

hydroponics basement

Basement - if you are lucky enough to have a basement, these are great places to grow provided it is clean and sealed off properly from mould and insects.

Lights that can be used - 110W, 250W, 400W, 600W

hydroponics Great space, typically no apex like a loft so maximises the growing area.
hydroponics Mould, damp and cold can be an issue. If your basement is fully heated like the rest of the house, it will probably be free of these problems.
hydroponics bedroom

Bedroom - probably the ideal setup for all-year round growing. Bedrooms have everything you need - central heating, space, nice ambient temperature and a window to open in order to let the air change.

Lights that can be used - 110W, 250W, 400W, 600W

hydroponics Perfect surroundings for indoor growing typically, central heating will allow winter growing and provided enough circulation fans are employed, it will grow well in the summer too.
hydroponics You will have to be very careful to seal off the room so no light escapes. The same rule will apply to smell and the use of carbon filters is essential.

Now that you have chosen your space, you can choose your lights. For attic, basement and bedroom a great combo is 250W + 400W or 250W + 600W. For a cupboard we would only recommend a 250W light due to heat build up.

The 250W will be used in the first stage of plant growth. A 400W or 600W light would be too strong for the plants until they reach at least 12" in height.

For flowering, a 400W light or 600W light for optimum results is ideal. A 250W light can be used also, but of course is not as powerful as 400W or 600W.

Choose the hydroponics system for you

We only sell 2 hydroponics systems - Flo-gro and NFT. We have tried other systems such as Ebb & Flow and Dutch Bucket but they just don't work that great and are complicated. So we think the Flo-Gro and NFT are the best bang for your buck.

hydroponics
Flo-Gro - ideal for beginners. Idiot proof for sure, just grow your plant into a 3" rockwool cube, insert into the Flo-gro with pebbles surrounding the plant and turn the pump on. Very very easy.

Works well with all plants, but excels with tall plants, mother plants and such like.

RECOMMENDED FOR THE 1ST TIME GROWER
hydroponics_nft NFT system - or nutrient film technique is probably the most efficient hydroponics system available. However, they are somewhat more difficult to use in that the plants must have a very good root system established to grow properly. Also, light must not get to the roots, so once plants are inserted into the system, it must be sealed up with black and white sheeting.

More cumbersome to change the nutrient (and also more essential to do so) than the Flo-gro, the NFT system requires more work and expertise to work.

However, once you have mastered the NFT system, it works fantastically well for short stock plants and gives monster yields.

Our final recommendations

For beginners, a cupboard is a great way to start. But if you have attic or basement space USE IT!

For those who want a large crop, we advise a bedroom - it'll give the best results but will require more installation work such as locks on doors, sheeting the floor and walls and sound proofing if required.

OK, now you've decided WHERE to grow, let's look at installing the hydroponics equipment....
